Live from Trafalgar Square in London. |
Enjoy a live tour of London's Trafalgar Square, the junction of some of the busiest streets in London: the Strand, the Mall, Whitehall and Charing Cross Road. The EarthCam camera pans, tilts and zooms to capture a variety of focal points in Trafalgar Square including Nelson's Column at its center and at its base, four bronze Lions, the National Gallery, the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and the famous pigeon population.
Nelson's Column: Built in honor of Admiral Nelson after his victory in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar, off the coast of Spain. Designed by John Nash in the 1830's. The 185 feet high column, supports a 17 foot high statue of Nelson. The National Gallery: On the north side of Trafalgar Square, the gallery contains one of the world's best collections of European painting dating from the 13th to 19th centuries. St Martin-in-the-Fields: One of London's most loved and lively parish churches. Originally surrounded by fields in which the monks of Westminster Abbey pastured their animals, the church now overlooks the east side of Trafalgar Square. Designed by James Gibbs in 1726. It was consecrated by the Bishop of London in 1726. Six Ionic Columns line the front of the church, giving the church a very Classical feel, similar to the Acropolis in Athens.
